Navratri: Honoring Durga Through Kali

The nine nights of Navratri are traditionally divided into three groups of three, each honoring a different aspect of the Goddess.

The First Three Nights of Navratri

The first three nights honor Durga in her fierce, protective forms and are associated with her aspect as Kali. The destructive power of the Divine Mother comes into play — but this is not malicious destruction. It is the kind that removes negativity, ego, and impurities. Kali represents raw transformative force — she eradicates the false ideals we cling to so that something new, pure, and real can grow. On these first three nights, devotees focus on invoking courage and strength.

About Kali

The Devi Mahatmya ("Glory of the Goddess") recounts Kali's glory: the slaying of the demon Raktabija, whose every drop of blood that hit the ground spawned a new demon. Durga, furious and outraged, spawned Kali from her forehead. Kali devoured the demons and drank Raktabija's blood before it could touch the earth. But once the battle was won, she continued to dance ecstatically on the battlefield, causing the world to tremble. Only when Shiva lay down in her path and she stepped on him did she stop.

How to Work With Her

Kali is the mother who liberates rather than sugarcoats. God would not want us to remain weak, dependent, or miserable — aching while we cling to materialism. Kali is always there to guide us back to our true autonomy, back to that unwavering light that shines within each and every one of us, showing us the way out of darkness and toward ascension.

A powerful mantra to connect with her is Om Krīm Kālikāyai Namaha. You can also take the time to consciously reflect on what in your life needs to be released. Ask her what you want help with, what you want to work on, what you want to grow — and watch your world transform.
